Didier Deschamps: FC Zurich Champions League Tie ‘Decisive’ To Olympique de Marseille
'DD' believes that anything short of three points is unlikely to be good enough for OM to reach the last 16 of Europe's most prestigious club competition...
OM lost their opening match 2-1 at home to Milan and suffered a further set-back against Real Madrid, who defeated them 3-0 in the Bernabeu. Another defeat would likely be fatal.
“We are obliged to get a result after two defeats in our first two matches,” Deschamps confirmed in a pre-match press conference. “Yes, this game will be decisive, because if we win we keep hope of qualifying for the knock-out round. A draw? This is not the best solution for us because Zurich then tally four points and OM only one.”
The Swiss outfit were supposed to be the whipping boys of the group, but after the Swiss gave los Blancos a mini-scare and defeated Milan, Deschamps does not even consider his side outright favourites going into Wednesday’s clash.
“I have great respect for FC Zurich, who scored two goals against Real and beat AC Milan away from home,” he explained. “They have three points and we have none, so I'm not sure we're favourites now. Nor that we are superior.”
After a run of three defeats in all competitions, les Phoceens got back to winning ways on Saturday, crushing Nancy 3-0.
Deschamps has been tipped to play with a 4-3-3 formation on Wednesday, with L’Equipe reporting that Gabriel Heinze, Hilton and Stephane Mbia will all play in defence. In addition, Fernando Morientes is expected to claim Brandao’s position in attack.
