Miracles Rarely Happen - Panathinaikos Coach Ten Cate
The former Chelsea assistant knew his side faced an uphill struggle...
Speaking after Atletico Madrid comprehensively knocked his side out of the Champions League, Panathinaikos coach Henk Ten Cate said his men were out of luck over the two ties.
The Dutch coach felt that his side gave a good account of themselves but the first goal, an own goal from Loukas Vyntra after just four minutes, put a serious dent in their already faint hopes of progressing.
Sergio Aguero put the tie beyond doubt with seven minutes on the clock to make it 5-2 on aggregate but Ten Cate believes things could have been different.
"Their goal came too early for us to have options. We played with heart and courage and were playing well but that goal made it difficult. The players were disappointed, but recovered and we had chances but we failed to score," said the ex-Chelsea assistant, according to AS.
He also paid tribute to Atletico but rued his side's bad luck over the two legs.
"Atletico is a team with quality and is physically strong but we had our chances. If I can talk about bad luck, these two games we had bad luck," commented Ten Cate.
"Everything has been against us in the tie, the draw and the two games. I am a little disappointed with the outcome because we had chances. If we got to 0-0 at half-time, things could be different but miracles rarely happen in this world."
