Humbled in an embarrassing fashion 5-1 by Olympique Lyonnais at the Stade Gerland last Wednesday, Anderlecht coach Ariel Jacobs has urged his players to show some pride when they tackle les Gones on Tuesday evening.

Les Mauve et Blanc performed way below their best standard in France, where they were caught off-guard by an inspired Lyon side, who ran rampant through them in an entertaining but one-sided first half. Anderlecht produced better after the break, but they could not reduce the whopping four goal deficit they faced at half-time.

“After a defeat like we suffered in the first leg, it is imperative that we get a burst of pride,” Jacobs told the press. “Each player must have a burst of hubris with respect to himself. There must also be a surge of collective pride for the club and for the supporters - in particular the supporters who travelled to Lyon.”

Asked if he had been impressed by Lyon’s 3-0 win over Auxerre at the weekend, the Belgians’ coach responded, “Not really.”

However, he did concede, “This team [Lyon] is able to wreak havoc both at national and European level. I do not expect to see an OL on Tuesday without motivation.”

Lisandro Lopez was one of the key catalysts to Lyon’s fine success last week, and Jacobs admitted to having mixed emotions about the highly-talented Argentine.

“As a coach I hope he will not play. As a lover of football I hope he will be on the park,” he noted.

In reality, the former Porto man’s presence should make little difference, as Tuesday’s game should prove a mere formality for OL.
