Gerard Pique was over the moon after Barcelona became the first Spanish side to ever win the treble by comprehensively beating Manchester United in the Champions League but admitted he couldn't help but feel some compassion for his former team-mates.

The talented young Spanish international defender left United to rejoin his boyhood club last year, but if ever he needed confirmation that he made the right decision it arrived last night in Rome.

"It was special because we played really well and we deserved to win," trumpeted Pique on Sky Sports after the game.

"Barcelona have always been my club since I was a young lad so that makes it special.

"I am sorry for Manchester United because they are very good friends of mine," he added.

"Since I have arrived here, I knew it was the right decision. I knew they were a great team. It has been a dream season."

Goals in either half from Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi capped a sumptuous display by Barcelona, who now simultaneously boast the trophies of the Champions League Primera Division and Copa del Rey.
