Roma’s Max Tonetto Apologises For Penalty Miss Against Arsenal

The left-back was the unlucky culprit for Roma, as he missed the decisive spot-kick in the shoot-out.

Roman ruin as the Giallorossi players crash out of the Champions League against Arsenal on penalties
Roma and Arsenal’s entertaining tie came to a thrilling end last night, as a penalty shoot-out was required to separate the two sides in the first knockout round of the Champions League.

Despite winning 1-0 in normal time and cancelling out their first-leg deficit, the Giallorossi were eliminated from the competition after Max Tonetto failed to convert his side’s eighth penalty.

“It is disappointing to have been eliminated, but we do leave the competition with our heads held high,” said a visibly distraught Tonetto in an interview with Sky Italia.

“We played a great game, and unfortunately we were punished by the lottery of penalties.

“I am so sorry to have been wrong, as we deserved to go through. I also apologise to the crowd, who encouraged us for two hours.

Tonetto’s missed penalty came as a result of the fact that he blasted the ball over the crossbar, something he put down to a last-second change of heart.

He said, “During the week we practiced penalties, and I always scored them.

“When I approached my kick tonight, I realized that [Manuel] Almunia moved in the direction I was heading at the last moment. Because of this I changed my mind, and made a huge mistake.

Roma will be hoping to put their elimination behind them this weekend, as they face an in-form Sampdoria side at the Luigi Ferraris stadium.
