Roma became the third and final Italian team to be eliminated from the first knockout round of the Champions League as Arsenal completed a clean sweep of the Serie A clubs.

Despite winning 1-0 over the 90 minutes, extra time and then penalties were required to separate the two sides, which eventually saw the Gunners come out on top.

The Giallorossi played some glorious football at times in the return leg and managed to create a number of opportunities late on in particular, leaving Alberto Aquilani to lament their failure in the shoot-out.

“It is very disappointing to be eliminated, and it is an injustice to be knocked out in penalties, especially after playing a game as beautiful as we did,” Aquilani declared in an interview with Sky Italia.

“We must start afresh from this match, as our primary target now is achieving fourth place.”

Aquilani made a return to the Champions League last night following a number of injuries that have hampered his campaign to date, and he even managed to coolly convert Roma’s sixth penalty in the shoot out.

He continued, “I was pleased to have the chance to take a penalty. I would have liked to have been in the top five, but there was already a list.

“My regret was that I was unable to contribute throughout the match.

The midfielder concluded the interview by quashing rumours that the man who missed first for Roma, Mirko Vucinic, did not want to take a spot kick, as well as also making reference to the English dominance over the Italian clubs.

He added, “Penalties are all based on luck, so we are sorry luck was not on our side tonight.

“As for Mirko, it is not true that he did not want to take a penalty.

“All three Italian clubs are eliminated now; however, we were the only one that did not deserve to go out.
