Michael Rensing: Bayern Munich Need To Look Forward Not Back
Two successive Bundesliga losses is not the best preparation for the Champions League, however, Bayern keeper Michael Rensing is nevertheless optimistic.
Bayern Munich have made a poor start to the Bundesliga since its return from the winter break, losing three of their last four games. The latest defeat came at home to Koeln on Saturday, in which the Bavarian giants went down 2-1.
The team have come under increasing pressure, but goalkeeper Michael Rensing is in buoyant mood ahead of Wednesday night’s clash with Sporting in the Champions League.
"We can’t change the past," Rensing told the club’s official website. "We’re looking to the future now. It’s a chance to haul ourselves out of this rut.
"A decent result in Lisbon would not only throw the door to the last eight wide open, it would be a boost, giving us plenty of energy and confidence for the Bundesliga.”
Bayern won’t be taking their Portuguese opponents lightly after seeing them finish just a point behind Barcelona in their group. In addition, Sporting will be confident after beating city-rivals Benfica at the weekend.
"Sporting haven’t got this far by sitting at home with their feet up accepting byes," Rensing warned.
Trainer Juergen Klinsmann has also explained that he expects his side to show a reaction to their shock loss to Koeln at the weekend.
"They know what they have to do,” he said. “I hope the team goes out and proves Saturday was just a slip-up. We need to invest more than we did against Koeln – and I’m sure we will.”
