Daniel Van Buyten: Bayern Need An Away Goal And A Clean Sheet
After scoring at the weekend for Bayern Munich, defender Daniel Van Buyten is turning his attention to keeping the Sporting attack at bay tonight.
Bayern Munich travel to Portugal to
face Sporting Lisbon in the first knock-out stage of this season’s Champions League, however, they travel
on the back of two successive Bundesliga defeats.
Daniel Van Buyten started in place of Lucio at the weekend and is battling the Brazilian and Martin Demichelis for a place in Juergen Klinsmann’s starting XI for the trip to the Jose Alvalade in Lisbon.
Regardless of whether he makes the team, the Belgian revealed that he believes Bayern need to score at least one away goal and keep the Portuguese scoreless in order for the German side to have a good chance of progressing.
"We know Sporting are in great shape at the moment and that we're in for a really hard evening's work,” Van Buyten told fcbayern.de. “But I believe we have the quality to get the job done, despite our patchy form in the Bundesliga.
"We have to try and score a goal, but ensure we don't concede. A 1-0 win wouldn't be a bad result.
"We won 1-0 at their place [two years ago], but it was a very tight game. We were under pressure and we played with ten men for a very long time. The stadium was a cauldron. But we came away with the win, and hopefully we can do it again."
Bayern have not looked defensively strong of late and Van Buyten believes that a whole-team effort will be needed on Wednesday to keep the likes of Liedson and Derlei at bay.
"Goals against aren't only a problem for the defence,” he explained. “All 11 players are involved. The whole team has to attack and the whole team has to defend. That's what we have to get back to, especially against Sporting Lisbon. They switch from defence to attack incredibly quickly."
