Austria-USA Preview: Klinsmann's in-form side seek 16th win in 18 games

A 0-0 draw with Scotland ended a run of three straight wins for the Americans but they face a home side who impressed during a tough World Cup qualifying group

The United States will aim to sign off their trip to Europe by returning to winning ways against Austria in Vienna on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klinsmann's side drew 0-0 with Scotland on Friday, bringing an end to a sequence of three straight victories that has contributed towards a flying recent run.

Prior to the Scotland stalemate, the USA had won 15 of their previous 16 matches - with a 3-1 World Cup qualifying defeat to Costa Rica in September their only blemish in that time.

The US qualified for their seventh consecutive World Cup finals by finishing four points clear at the top of the Concacaf section, winning six of their final seven matches after an indifferent start to the campaign.

They conceded just eight goals in 10 games in the final group stage, and goalkeeper Tim Howard believes that a strong defence can form the cornerstone of a successful side.

"Defensively, you always want to build on good results, good performances and a clean sheet," said the Everton man after the Scotland game.

"That's what you need to feel good about yourself. I believe if you draw a game and win the next one it becomes a really good week.

"We're going to Austria, another tough game away from home. If we can get the victory and end on a high, everybody's going to feel really good."

The hosts, meanwhile, come into the game on the back of the disappointment of having missed out on a place in the finals in Brazil next year.

Marcel Koller's charges finished third in a strong Uefa Group C, 11 points adrift of runaway winners Germany but only three behind Sweden, who booked a play-off berth as one of the best runners-up.

It proved another blow for the Austrians, who have not qualified for the finals since 1998, and they will now be looking to switch their focus as they look ahead to qualifying for the European Championship in France in 2016.

However, defender Aleksandar Dragovic believes that they have the right work ethic to turn their fortunes around.

"The team is fully motivated," said the Dynamo Kiev man ahead of the USA match.

"The team boss knows exactly what he wants to see from us. Everyone gives 100 per cent on the pitch."
