Argentine Apertura Weekend Preview: Matchday 5

Round 5 of the Argentine Apertura Championship promises fans lots of excitement. Both Boca and River will be hoping to return to winning ways against relatively easy opponents...

Juan Manuel Salgueiro - Estudiantes de La Plata
League leaders Rosario Central will be hoping to win their fifth successive match of the season when they take on third-placed Banfield at the Gigante de Arroyito stadium on Friday night.

In Friday's other game, second-placed Estudiantes de La Plata clash with 18th-placed Huracan in Buenos Aires. Los Pincharratas are expected to fight for the championship this season.

One of the most highly anticipated matches of the round is the one between Buenos Aires rivals Independiente and Velez Sarsfield on Saturday. Velez have been in good form again this season, and come into the clash after eliminating Boca Juniors from the Copa Sudamericana midweek.

Also on Saturday, Colon de Santa Fe take on Chacarita Juniors, Gimnasia de La Plata battle with Tigre. Meanwhile, Argentinos Juniors face Atletico Tucuman.

On Sunday, Boca will be hoping to return to winning ways at home to Godoy Cruz of Mendoza. Alfio Basile's side have only won once so far this season. They will need to win the championship in order to qualify for the 2010 Copa Libertadores.

River Plate have also been struggling, and will be forced to claim the three points away to Arsenal de Sarandi. Nestor Gorosito's side have also only won one of their four matches this season, and heavy pressure has mounted on the coach and his squad. A defeat to Arsenal could force the resignation of the coach.

Lanus, who haven't been at their best this season, clash with Newell's Old Boys. Finally, San Lorenzo and Racing Club meet in the latest version of the heated Buenos Aires derby.
