Fernando Torres' big money £20 million move from Atletico Madrid to Liverpool could have been regarded as a flambouyant spend, but 'El Nino' was quick to repay the faith shown in him by manager Rafa Benitez as he netted 33 times in his rookie season in England's top flight.
His poise, composure in front of goal, together with his turn of pace, and his finesse have all been marvelled in 2008, and his performances for his national side, Spain, during the summer's continental competition also proved significant as it was he who downed Germany in the final.
Torres, 24, today told journalists at a press conference in Switzerland ahead of the announcement of the FIFA World Player of the Year that all the members in the Spanish squad were worthy enough of nomination for the coveted award.
"All of the 23 national players of Spain played well enough to earn their right to be here, it is hard to single out one specific player but indeed it is a privilege to represent Spain here today."
He continued: "There are more great players in the world, like the five who are here [Xavi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Kaka] and there are some more who deserve to be here just as much."
The striking sensation also mentioned that whenever he plays virtual football he always picks Spain as the national team, and Liverpool as his club side.
The FIFA World Player of the Year will be announced this evening at approximately 23:00 CET. Stay logged on to Goal.com for our exclusive, LIVE coverage of the event, beginning at 20:00 CET.
