Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has revealed that he believes the English Premier League to be superior to Spain's Primera Division in a statement sure to cause consternation in his homeland.

El Niño plied his trade in Spain's top-flight for five years, making his Primera debut at the beginning of the 2002-03 season, after his club Atlético Madrid won promotion from the second tier.

Torres spent the next five seasons lighting up La Liga with a consistent scoring rate before an expensive switch to Liverpool in 2007.

His words are sure to breed resentment in the followers of Liverpool's Champions League rivals Atlético, the club at which he was named captain at the age of 19.

He told the press: "It isn't easy to adapt but once you have, you would have trouble wanting to play anywhere else.

"The Premier League is way ahead of the Spanish league.

"You go to play away at a team in the relegation zone and you find yourself playing on a perfect pitch, with the stands full to bursting and opponents who are there to play football.

"And even if they lose, the crowd are going to cheer them on until the death. You only see this in British football."

After a dream maiden season in England, Torres hailed the impact of Anfield on his game. He admits that he now feels completely at home in Liverpool, and that he is proud to represent the Reds.

He continued: "The club is a symbol of a city which fought to stay alive.

"Everyone is proud of the team. Players want to come here because they know that Liverpool is a truly great club.

"Anfield is the most English of all the grounds - people live and breath football there.

"With just 45,000 fans there, that roar they give makes you think you have wings on your feet."
