However, a late set-back meant that boss Sir Alex Ferguson had to once again use young centre-back Jonny Evans. Although the starlet had another impressive game, Fergie will be loathe to be without his captain as the Premier League title race heats up.
In order to get to the root of the problem, Ferdinand has been sent to undergo more scans.
"We are sending him for another scan because we want to get to the bottom of the problem," explained United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, referring to Ferdinand and the spasms, which have ruled his skipper out for five games.
Ferdinand's problems have made fellow stopper Nemanja Vidic's role much more important. He has to look out for rookie Evans as well as have a massive impact in his own right, however, he did this magnificently against Chelsea.
