Sir Alex Ferguson took the opportunity to get Paul Scholes involved in Japan as Manchester United bagged the Club World Cup trophy.

At 34 and plagued with injuries, the midfielder is certainly in the twilight of his United career.

Another veteran, 38-year-old Edwin Van der Sar, appears to have survived Fergie's brief period of experimentation between the sticks.

Tomas Kuszczak and Ben Foster looked set to fight it out to succeed him, but the Dutchman has now signed a contract extension and looks set to continue as No.1 for the foreseeable future.

Both players feel that they have a part to play in another trophy-packed United season as the campaign moves into 2009.

Scholes said: "My aim for 2009 is to see United win everything and for me to be a part of a team that goes on to lift trophies at the end of the season.

"Japan is done, so now we can really concentrate on the league, the Champions League and the two domestic cups."

Goalie Van der Sar added of his fine display in the Club World Cup final against LDU Quito: "I wouldn’t have signed my new contract it if I didn’t think I could make saves like that."

United visit Stoke City on Boxing Day, before hosting Middlesbrough three days later.
