Manchester United have endured a less than stellar opening to the season as they set about defending their double triumph of last term.
They sit third in the Premier League table, six points adrift of leaders Liverpool - far from a disaster, but perhaps not quite what was expected of such a confident and richly talented squad.
However, manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes there is a very simple reason for United's somewhat sluggish start.
He said in The Sun: “You look at the first half of the season and we’ll have played away to almost every team who finished in the top 10 last season.
“That’s incredible. I have to say having home advantage against those teams at the end of the season should help us.”
Indeed, the Red Devils have taken road trips to face each of their Big Four rivals - Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal - as well as tricky fixtures with Manchester City, Aston Villa, Everton, Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth.
And Ferguson is confident his charges with bolt home during the back half, and statistics from the last two campaigns would suggest he has every right to feel that way.
He continued: “This season if we can get to the New Year and be within two or three points of the top we would have a great chance.
“Traditionally we are always better second half of the season.”
