Brazil coach Dunga must have watched joyously as striker Robinho ended his Real Madrid nightmare, moving to the City of Manchester Stadium in the summer in a mega £32.5 million deal. Since then, his confidence has come flooding back.

Now, the boss feels that, although Robinho's Mancunian rival Cristiano Ronaldo has a massive edge, the samba star will soon chuck him off the podium atop the footballing world.

Dunga said after watching his Brazil trounce Ronaldo's Portugal 6-2 in midweek: "Sure, we have to respect what Cristiano Ronaldo has done in recent years. He is deserving of recognition.

"However, Robinho is also an exceptional level and is growing, maturing.

"Soon, we will have three Brazilians disputing the award for best in the world."

Citizen Robinho himself is keen on doing just that. He missed out on the shortlist for the World Player of the Year gong and hopes his improving fortunes can land him land personal honours.

"My objective is to be the best in the world, without a doubt," he said. "I hope that in the next few years I can compete in the trophy for the best player in the world."
