Christian Panucci’s deal with Roma is set to expire next June and his representative Fabio Parisi confirmed yesterday that negotiations for a renewal have been agonisingly slow and that the club should have dealt with the situation earlier.
The agent insisted that there is still room to find a solution to this impasse, but Italian press reports speculate today that the parties are unlikely to meet half-way. The club directors are keen to offer the ex-Milan full-back a one-year extension, but they would also like to thin his wage packet, whereas Panucci wants to preserve his current salary of €2 million per season.
Under these circumstances, it is highly likely that the 35-year-old will leave Trigoria next summer and there are whispers that David Beckham’s team LA Galaxy have approached him with a big money offer.
Should he turn down a move to the USA, it is suggested that he could complete an emotional return to his youth club Genoa, where he plied his trade from 1990 to 1993.
