The capital club is willing to offer the Italian international an extra year on his current contract, extending it until the end of the 2009-10 season.
Sources predict that the new contract will most likely contain the possibility of extending further until 2011, after which he is expected to retire and become an Roma club official.
The Italian back signed for the club in 2001 and he has been solid this season, chipping in with a few goals at crucial times.
The Giallorossi know that they need to move quickly if they are to hang onto him or they could risk losing the defender on a free transfer at the end of the season.
