The Brazilian hit-man will be out of contract in the summer and a number of reports in both France and Italy had linked the striker with a move to Roma.
However, L'Equipe claims Lyon are ready to offer their man a new deal as they do not want to lose him on a free transfer to the Italians having paid €15.6 million for him four years ago.
Fred is set to meet the club's directors over the next few days to make his future at the Stade Gerland more secure and it's unlikely he will be leaving.
The Giallorossi were hoping to bring him in to link up with Mirko Vucinic and Julio Baptista but they will now have to look elsewhere for reinforcements.
The Lupi have only scored 11 goals in Serie A this term and some extra fire-power is needed if they are to qualify for the Champions League places this season.
Roma have struggled up front and this has seen them slip down the table.
However, their derby win on Sunday night over Lazio seems to have out them back on the right track.
