Milan defender Alessandro Nesta may need to go under the knife to finally cure his on-going back problem.

The former Lazio man has been tormented by constant injury and he cannot seem to recover. Milan have always stated that an operation wasn't neccessary, but Il Corriere Dello Sport claim it is.

Reports suggest Nesta will have to undergo surgery to his back in mid-January and, if that's the case, then his season will be over.

The club are yet to confirm such a course of action, but his absence from the pitch has led a number of Italian sports papers to believe the only way forward is a medical intervention.

It's not the news Milan wanted to hear as they have spent thousands on sending the stopper to see specialists in Miami but it has all been to no avail.

The Rossoneri are struggling at the back and Nesta's injury has plunged the club into some frantic panic buying.

Vice-president Adriano Galliani is currently looking at a number of names as a replacement for the Italian, and with this latest blow, the chances are some new faces will be arriving sooner rather than later.
