Milan's collective age is really beginning to show. Alessandro Nesta has yet to feature this term and the club are deeply concerned that the former Lazio captain might not be able to return to action at the highest level due to a chronic back problem that intense physiotherapy has thus far been unable to alleviate.
Considering that summer loan signing Philippe Senderos has also struggled with fitness problems since completing a move from Arsenal, the Diavoli are scouring the European market to find a young and fit central defender to tighten their back-line, which has shipped 18 goals in the first 17 games of the Serie A season.
The main target has now become former Real Madrid man Ivan Helguera, who has mutually rescinded his contract with Valencia earlier this month.
Other viable options are still Palermo’s sturdy centre-back Moris Carrozzieri and Napoli’s Leandro Rinaudo.
In midfield, if the plan to sign Stephen Appiah via Chievo Verona collapses, the Via Turati directors seem keen to pursue Palermo’s journeyman Giulio Migliaccio, but Celtic’s Massimo Donati is also hopeful of a return to San Siro.
