Milan directors have long been admirers of Sergio Ramos, who in their eyes could become the heir to skipper Paolo Maldini, who is expected to retire at the end of the current season.

The rumour mill set off again last month, as it was alleged that the 22-year-old’s relationship with Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster had turned sour.

And Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport reports this morning that a sensational swap deal seems to be in the pipelines: the Rossoneri have sounded out the Spanish champions again, but Real have allegedly asked to get Alexandre Pato in exchange.

Los Blancos have been scouring the transfer market in order to replace injured striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy, who will be out for the rest of the season after suffering knee ligament damage, and have been linked with several Serie A-based hitmen in recent weeks.

Should the Diavoli agree to sacrifice the former Internacional ace, vice president Adriano Galliani could launch a bid for Fiorentina ace Adrian Mutu, as whispers over an alleged interest in the Romanian international started circulating yesterday.
