El Jardinero was frozen out of the squad by José Mourinho last month after a verbal row during the home game with Genoa.

There were rumours that the prolific hitman was headed for the exit door, since his current contract runs out at the end of this season, and that he could re-join former side Bologna next January.

However, the Italian sports Bible reports this morning that the Via Durini directors have approached the player’s representatives with a new offer which would extend his stay at Appiano Gentile.

It is still early stages, but it is suggested that the 34-year-old will sign a contract extension until 2010.

Keeping hold of the Argentine is even more important now, as his compatriot Hernan Crespo looks poised to move to Real Madrid in the new year.

The expected meeting between his agent Fernando Hidalgo and the Spanish champions’ director of sport Pedrag Mijatovic did not take place yesterday, but the duo allegedly spoke on the phone and the Merengues could soon table an improved bid to capture Valdanito.
