In-form Dutch winger Arjen Robben netted the winning goal right on the half-hour mark, when he danced past four defenders before rocketing a shot from the edge of the box into the top of the goal. And the 24-year-old was overjoyed with his contribution.
“I believe that this is my best goal with Real Madrid, although we won because everyone in the team worked hard,” he said during the post-match interviews.
“The most important thing is that we avoided any more injuries and we defended very well and did not concede any goals.
“Now, we must start improving our attack and score more goals to give the team more confidence.”
Robben then went on to analyse the debut of his compatriot, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
He said: “Huntelaar is a great player, but he has gone for five weeks without player and it was a difficult game for him.
“This was his first match and he was a bit unlucky not to score, although he had his chances. But I’m sure he will score lots of goals for
Finally, the ex-Chelsea wingman assessed the team’s title chances as they remain 12 points behind leaders,
“It is a difficult gap to overcome because 12 points is a lot, but we must only focus on ourselves and no one else.
“Until February 25 [when the Champions League resumes] we will have a full week to prepare for games and we must work hard,” he concluded.
