Independiente secured a narrow victory over Liga de Quito in Avellaneda, but it was not enough to turn round the deficit from the first leg and keep the 2010 Copa Sudamericana champions in the competition.

Having lost 2-0 in Quito, the Argentines knew that they had to go all-out against Edgardo Bauza's well-drilled team. Playmakers Matias Defederico and Patricio Rodriguez were both included, as was striker Leonel Nunez

It was the former Olympiakos and Bursaspor man who made the break through to give the Rojo hope. On the stroke of half-time, Nunez picked the ball up on the edge of the area after Ezequiel Gonzalez's skewed clearance and released a bomb which sailed into the net and half the home team's disadvantage.

The second half was all Independiente, but despite pounding the Liga net they could not find the goal which would have taken the tie into penalties. The Ecuadorians will move on to face the winner of Libertad and Sao Paulo's last 16 clash in the quarter-finals.
