Copa Sudamericana 2010: Thursday Round-Up
Banfield hold the advantage over Velez after their second round clash, plus Defensor go through in the final first round encounter...
By Daniel Edwards
Second Round: Velez Sarsfield 0-1 Banfield
Banfield pulled off a battling win last night in Liniers to put themselves firmly in the driving seat in the Sudamericana, with Apertura high-flyers Velez struggling to show any sort of cutting edge in front of goal.
The only goal of the encounter came after 29 minutes of the first half. Midfielder Walter Erviti opened up the Velez defence on the left and squared for Cristian Garcia. The 22-year-old slotted it away from close range at the second attempt. From that point onwards both teams had chances to add to the scoreline but were thwarted, Roberto Bologna in particular had a storming game in the Banfield net to deny Velez.
Banfield and Velez will play the second leg on September 26.
First Round: Olimpia 1-1 Defensor Sporting - Defensor win 3-1 on aggregate
In the final match of the first phase, Paraguay's Olimpia found a two-goal deficit from the first leg an obstacle too big to overcome, as they could only draw with Uruguayans Defensor in Asuncion yesterday evening. The result means that Defensor will move on to play the Peruvian club Sport Huancayo.
The home side dominated possession throughout the game, but found it difficult to break though a determined Defensor defensive effort. Looking dangerous on the counter-attack it was the Uruguayans who opened the scoring through striker Rodrigo Mora just after half-time. The goal essentially killed off the tie and left Olimpia needing an unlikely four goals in the second half.
The 'Decano' did manage a late consolation through Argentine Juan Carlos Pereyra, but it was too little too late for the Paraguayans. The encounter was soured late on after a stoppage forced by Olmpia fans throwing objects onto the field.
