Copa Sudamericana: Velez Sarsfield Force Draw With Boca Juniors
El Fortin picked up a valuable draw at the Bombonera stadium...
Velez Sarsfield are in a good position to reach the round of 16 stage of the Copa Sudamericana after holding the two-time winners of the competition to a 1-1 draw.
Boca Juniors pushed to the attack straight from the kick-off, and in the 3rd minute Pablo Mouche put them ahead when he latched on to a good through ball and beat German Montoya with a brilliant finish.
Alfio Basile's side dominated proceedings, and almost went further ahead moments later when a Sebastian Battaglia header struck the right post.
Playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme pulled the strings in the Boca midfield, and seemed to rediscover his top form, after looking tired during the European tour.
Boca were completely on top, but although they played in Velez's half they were restricted to long-distance efforts.
In the second period Velez Sarsfield crept more into the game, and they came close to drawing level when a Victor Zapata header was brilliantly kept out by Boca goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri.
The effort inspired the side from Liniers, as they looked extremely dangerous when moving forward. But still they had trouble penetrating the rock-solid Boca defence.
Substitute Ariel Rosada almost doubled Boca's lead when he fired the ball across goal with just the goalkeeper to beat.
However, in the 78th minute Velez drew level when they broke on a swift counterattack, and Zapata blasted the ball towards goal and it came off Gabriel Paletta before crossing Abbondanzieri's goal line.
Backed by the support of the home fans Boca looked for a late winner, and they should have scored when Federico Insua found himself unmarked inside of the area. But the midfielder's weak shot was saved.
Minutes later a long-range missile from Nicolas Gaitan was kept out by an alert Montoya in the Velez goal. Insua also tested his luck from distance but to no avail
Velez Sarsfield claimed an important draw against a Boca Juniors side who have yet to reach their top form.
