Captured Mexican Cartel Leader Admits Hiding Salvador Cabanas Shooter
Edgar Valdez confesses on video to hiding Salvador Cabanas' attacker for three months, and that the individual now lives in Colombia.
By Daniel Edwards
The alleged head of one of Mexico's most notorious drug trafficking cartels has revealed to police that he knows the whereabouts of Paraguay and Club America star Salvador Cabanas' attacker, and that he helped to hide him for a period of time after the January shooting, the AP has reported.
Edgar Valdez, known in his native country as 'La Barbie' for his blue eyes and blonde hair, was arrested on Monday near Mexico City, and is rumoured to be linked to the notorious Beltran Leyva drug cartel. Speaking on Tuesday, Valdez among other things admitted to harbouring Cabanas' attacker Jose Jorge 'JJ' Balderas Garza.
"I realised what was going on even before [the attack] because it was early in the morning and then I shouted at him, he had already packed a bag. Those two were friends, but because that day he was annoyed at Cabanas they started to fight," 'La Barbie' revealed on the video tape.
"After I put him in an office in Atizapan, he was there about three months - he is working now in Colombia."
Cabanas was shot in the face earlier this year in a horrific attack in a Mexico City nightclub, after arguing with Balderas. Miraculously the Paraguay star survived and even began training recently to resume a professional football career. Serious complications from the attack however - not least the fact that he still has a bullet lodged in his brain - will make the forward's return a second miracle.
