The health of Paraguayan attacker Salvador Cabanas slightly improved on Thursday as the cerebral edema - an accumulation of fluid - is starting to retreat, according to his doctor, Ernesto Martinez.

"The situation of Salvador remains delicate, but he has slightly improved over the past hours. Our latest tests indicate that the swelling inside his head is starting to retreat and that's positive. Things haven't looked this good since his arrival," said Martinez at a press conference.

However, Martinez emphasised that this slight improvement doesn't mean that Cabanas' situation is no longer life-threatening. The player's situation remains very serious.

Cabanas was shot in the head inside the "Bar Bar" nightclub in Mexico City on the morning of January 25. There is no known reason for the attack, but the player was reportedly conscious on the way to the hospital.

Cabanas received medical attention during the early hours of the morning and was supposed to undergo a craniotomy later in the day. However, doctors decided that it was too risky to proceed and the bullet was not extracted. He remains in a critical but stable condition.
