Paraguayan defender Morel Rodriguez, of Boca Juniors, was proclaimed the best Paraguayan footballer of 2008, after a poll conducted by popular newspaper Abc Color.
Morel (30) received a total of 291 points, a much greater difference to that of the second best positioned player, Toluca defender Paulo da Silva, with 219 points.
Morel Rodriguez, who also defends the Paraguayan national team who are in first place of the 2010 South American World Cup qualifiers, was crowned Argentine Apertura Championship winners with Boca last week.
In third position appeared 2007 winner Salvador Cabanas (192), of Club America of Mexico. While Roque Santa Cruz of Blackburn Rovers ended in fourth place.
"I'm very happy for this prize which, at the same time, gives you a great responsibility to maintain the same level," declared the defender, who is the son of former Paraguayan international Eugenio Morel.
