Goal.com Poll Results: Casillas deserves to win the Ballon d'Or

The Spaniard has enjoyed a year of success as an individual as well as with his club and national teams, and our readers believe he should be rewarded with the top prize

Iker Casillas would be a worthy winner of the Fifa Ballon d'Or after a fantastic 2012 at both club and international level, Goal.com readers have decided.

The 31-year-old captained Spain to Euro 2012 glory after leading Real Madrid to the title in La Liga, and became the first player to amass 100 victories in international football when La Roja clinched the European Championship with a 4-0 win over Italy in the final last Sunday.

While previous editions of the Ballon d'Or have usually been awarded to outfield players, there have been growing calls for Casillas to be recognised as the best player in the world after his successful 2011-12.

And according to the Goal.com poll, 64.59 per cent (3407 votes) of readers agree with the likes of Pele and Raul Albiol that the Spain No.1 deserves to end Lionel Messi's stranglehold on the award. However, 35.41% (1868 votes) of readers feel that he has not done enough to end the Argentine's monopoly.
