Managerial turmoil and a club instability entering Sunday's Superclasico was not enough to deter Guadalajara. Sergio Amaury Ponce knocked a header past Guillermo Ochoa in the second half as Chivas beat America 1-0 in Estadio Jalisco.

Chivas moved past America in the Group 2 table but, perhaps more importantly, they sent their bitter and hated rivals away from their hallowed grounds with a loss.

With new coach Francisco "Paco" Ramirez on the sideline for the first time, Chivas improved to 5-5-4 and their 19 points are just four back of Pumas in the group standings. America meanwhile entered the weekend in second place but are now behind Chivas and Tecos as well.

FIRST HALF

America came out firing. Just three minutes in, Angel Reyna found space in front of the goal and nearly got to a head to a ball from Jean Beausejour but Chivas goalkeeper Luis Michel was close enough to Reyna to distract him, and Reyna skied the shot over the bar.

Chivas had some early chances but Omar Arellano's precision was off. On the quarter-hour, Ramon Morales sent a well-placed through ball to Arellano's feet, but Arellano placed a weak attempt on goal instead of sending a pass over to Alberto Medina on the right side of the box.

In the 27th minute, Chivas suffered a blow when defender Jonny Magallon left the game with a thigh injury and was replaced by Edgar "Chore" Mejia.

Medina had Chivas' first clear attempt in the 32nd minute when he ripped a shot on goal but his attempt went right at Ochoa, who did well to parry the ball away.

Robert De Pinho nearly gave America a goal at the end of the first half but Hector Reynoso was in a good position and stopped De Pinho's dangerous attempt.

Arellano had a late attempt but pushed his shot wide of the goal.

SECOND HALF

Pardo started America's second-half effort with a 15-yard shot on goal but his low effort was stopped by Michel.

Chivas had a pair of chances shortly after but neither Xavier Baez and Arellano could place their attempts in dangerous situations.

De Pinho fired a shot on goal in the 61st minute but Michel did well to dive and stop the shot.

Chivas eventually found the back of the net. Medina sent a cross in from the left flank. The ball carried over America's defense to the far post, where Ponce raced down unmarked. Ponce knocked a header between Ochoa and the right post and the game finally featured a goal.

In the 73rd minute, Esqueda nearly equalized but Michel stopped Esqueda's shot from close range without much problem. Chivas followed that up with a pair of shots in an attempt to extend their lead but Ochoa did well to make the saves.

The rest of the match featured little offense from either side. America failed to mount any meaningful possession.
