Monterrey beat Cruz Azul 2-1 in Estadio Azul on Sunday to clinch a 6-4 aggregate win and earn themselves a third Mexican league championship.
Goals from Aldo De Nigris and Humberto Suazo were enough to see them clinch another star for the crest and the title of Campeon leaving Cruz Azul to wait another season to add to their last Championship win in 1997.
De Nigris opened the scoring in the 54th minute with a well-taken header. Suazo crossed from the right and De Nigris easily beat Melvin Brown at the back post to head past Jesus Corona and put Monterrey 5-3 up on aggregate.
Cruz Azul got themselves back into the game 13 minutes from the end. Alejandro Castro headed past Orozco from an excellent corner by Rogelio Chavez.
But it was never destined to be Cruz Azul's day and with time ticking down, Humberto ‘Chupete’ Suazo received a ball from Osvaldo Martinez and, unmarked, bore down on Corona before rolling it past Corona to dispell any late nerves for Monterrey.
