Violence Mars Olympiakos – Saint-Etienne UEFA Cup Build-Up
The fixture between the two clubs has been marked by violent incidents in the streets of Athens prior to kick-off.
The UEFA Cup tie between Olympiakos and Saint-Etienne has been marked by violent incidents in the streets of Athens prior to kick-off. Saint-Etienne’s fans have the reputation of being a passionate and rather volatile group and this appears to have been on full display in the streets of Athens tonight. Greek media are saying as many as 300 of les Verts’ fans have been involved in pre-match incidents this evening, Goal.com’s French site reports.
It is stated that the group began throwing bottles at their Greek counterparts outside the Karaiskakis Stadium. Although the police intervened quickly, they led the supporters of the French club into the stadium, allowing them to see the game in its entirety.
However, even inside the ground, Sainte’s fans could not keep out of trouble as they attacked Olympiakos fans, who were trying to remove the French club’s banners. This prompted the Greeks to retaliate, causing what have been described as “ugly scenes.” Police managed to stop the fighting but the situation seems like a tinderbox at present.
At half-time, Saint-Etienne led the fixture 2-0 thanks to goals from Ilan and Geoffrey Dernis.
