thumbnail Hello,

The Portuguese goalkeeper was his side's hero after saving two penalties in the shootout victory but he has acknowledged things could have gone differently

Sevilla goalkeeper Beto has admitted that his side were somewhat fortunate to beat Benfica on penalties in Wednesday's Europa League final in Turin.

The Portuguese champions created a number of chances during 120 minutes but failed to beat Beto from open play, with the Portuguese keeper making strong saves from Ezequiel Garay and Lima in particular.

Unai Emery's men eventually emerged victorious after spot-kicks, with Bento the hero as he denied Oscar Cardozo and Rodrigo, but the 32-year-old concedes they had to fight all the way in Turin.

"Those last 20 minutes, Benfica came at us with everything they had. We just tried to keep the ball and look to hit them on the counterattack. Benfica are a great team – we knew that already," Beto was quoted as saying by uefa.com.

"We gave it our all. We took the game to penalties and there, luck was on our side. You can't really predict what will happen. The outcome of a penalty shoot-out is always unpredictable, whatever you may know about the players, and what the players know about you.

"You react at the last moment according to a feeling you might have, your instinct. And you need power in your feet to jump."

Beto then went on to voice his pride with Sevilla's victory - their third in the tournament in nine years - and made it clear that they are keen to make another step forward in the years to come.

"I felt a lot of pride and happiness. It was just a beautiful and historic moment. Every player wants to be part, even a small part, of the history of a club. We wrote history and I am very proud to be part of Sevilla's history.

"This team is very eager to grow. There is a buzz about this team. It's a very young side. We've become stronger, and we are looking forward to achieving more and growing."
