Uefa has chosen Bjorn Kuipers as the man to take charge of Wednesday’s Europa League final between Chelsea and Benfica at the Amsterdam Arenal.
Kuipers has officiated in the Champions League on a regular basis this season, most recently refereeing the first-leg of the semi-final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
The Dutchman has only taken charge of one Europa League match this season, a round of 32 encounter between Liverpool and Zenit St Petersburg, but Uefa is confident he is the right man for the job.
Kuipers impressive CV includes matches in the Champions League, Europa League, Euro 2012, the 2009 Uefa Under-21’s and the 2006 under-17 finals.
He becomes the first official to be awarded a final in his home country since Italian Tullio Lanese in 1991.
