Pardew targets Europa League success after latest Newcastle home defeat
By Danny Hart
Nov 18, 2012 10:00:00 PM
The Magpies manager is hoping to recover from two Premier League losses in a row at St James' Park by progressing in Europe with a win over Maritimo on Thursday
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is keen for his side to bounce back from Saturday's defeat to Swansea City by reaching the knock-out rounds of the Europa League. The Magpies currently lie 12th in the Premier League table after going down 2-1 at home to the Welsh outfit - their second successive Premier League loss at St James' Park.
But the 51-year-old hopes to avoid another home defeat when Newcastle take on Maritimo on Thursday.
Victory over the Portuguese side would guarantee progression to the last 32 of the Europa League for the Group D leaders.
Pardew told reporters: "We certainly don't want to lose three home games on the trot, that would be a blow.
"It's a big game for us because if we can win it, it guarantees qualification, and that's what we need to do, get one hurdle out of the way and then look for our first win away from home in the Premier League in the next game.
"They are the two immediate hurdles in front of us."
