Player Ratings: Rapid Vienna 3-3 Celtic
Celtic battle back from disastrous start to grab dramatic draw
By Chris Myson
RAPID VIENNA
Raimund Hedl – 6.5 – Made a string of important saves either side of half-time as Celtic came back into the game. The pick of the bunch was a super stop from a long-range Niall McGinn strike, which he superbly tipped over the crossbar. Conceded three goals, although it is hard to blame him for any of them.
Andreas Dober – 5 – Was given a torrid time by McGinn with almost all of Celtic's first-half attacks coming down Rapid's right. Replaced after just half an hour, which summed up his struggles.
Ragnvald Soma – 5.5 – The defender allowed himself to be turned too easily by Fortune for Celtic's first goal. Then, he afforded McGowan too much space to smash home the last-gasp leveller.
Jurgen Patocka – 6 – Probably Rapid's best defender on the night, Patocka had a relatively quiet evening other than receiving an early booking for a rash challenge on Willo Flood.
Markus Katzer – 5.5 – Was involved in very little of his side's play as most of the action took place on Rapid's right, or at the other end of the pitch, until being caught out by Flood's quick free kick for the second goal.
Steffen Hofmann – 7 – The Rapid captain put in a good performance, setting up Jalevic's first goal with a nice pass and showing good quality on the ball.
Stefan Kulovits – 6.5 – Started quietly, but put in a decent effort after being moved back to right-back having started the game in midfield.
Veli Kavlak – 6.5 – Did a decent job in midfield, keeping the play ticking over with some neat passing. Came off after an hour.
Branko Boskovic – 6 – Cut inside from the left and forced Boruc into a good save late in the first half. Almost cost his side after the break with a needless flick inside his own half, but his goalkeeper saved well from McGinn.
Hamdi Salihi – 7.5 – Created the second goal for Jelavic with a good low cut-back and scored the third after his talented strike partner returned the favour. Missed a good headed chance in the second half before being replaced late on after an impressive performance.
Nikica Jelavic – 8 – Scored after 30 seconds with a good 20-yard strike after he forced McManus into an error. Knew less about his second goal, which he bundled home from close-range, before producing some excellent skill to create his side's third. Less prominent after the break, but had made his mark.
Substitutes
Christopher Trimmel – 6 – Came on for the struggling Andreas Dober after half an hour, prompting a tactical re-shuffle from the hosts. Was relatively quiet, although he did have one good run down the right to create a chance for Salihi.
Christopher Drazan – 5.5 – The young midfielder came on with half an hour to go, but had little chance to express himself on the match with Celtic doing most of the attacking as the game neared its conclusion. Received a late booking.
Muhammed Ildiz - n/a - Replaced Salihi in the closing stages.
CELTIC
Artur Boruc – 6 – A frustrating night for the Polish goalkeeper, who was left helplessly exposed by his defence in the early stages. Made one important save from Boskovic.
Paul Caddis – 6.5 – The youngster put in a good performance, sticking to his task defensively and trying to make an impact going forward throughout the 90 minutes.
Glenn Loovens – 4.5 – A nightmare display from the former Cardiff City man. Caught out positionally for Rapid's second goal and was turned inside out by Jelavic in the build-up to the third. Improved in the second half but the damage was done.
Stephen McManus – 5 – The captain ensured his side got off to the worst possible start when he gave away possession at the edge of his own box after 30 seconds and gave Jelavic the chance to score. Under less pressure after the break with his side dominating.
Mark Wilson – 6.5 – Did a decent job at left-back. It was his cross that led to Celtic's first goal, which gave them a foothold in the game after the nightmare start.
Willo Flood – 6.5 – Drifted in and out of the game and was anonymous at times. Did have a decent early effort after twisting and turning well, while his quick free kick set up the second goal. Needs more game time to become more consistent.
Landry N’Guemo – 6.5 – Provided a lot of energy in midfield and didn't try anything too extravagant when in possession. Decent display.
Marc Crosas – 7 – The former Barcelona man only had one slack pass all game, which allowed Boskovic a chance, but Artur Boruc was there to bail him out. Other than that he was faultless in possession, showing excellent ability. Created the equaliser with a good cross.
Niall McGinn – 8 – An excellent performance. Tormented the opposing full-back to the extent he was substituted midway through the first half. Centre to all Celtic's good play and set up the second goal with a super cross. All that was missing was a goal, which he missed out on thanks to two good saves from Raimund Hedl.
Marc-Antoine Fortune – 7.5 – A lively performance from the front-man, who has taken time to settle in since his summer move but now seems to be finding some form. Ended the game with two goals - the first an excellent turn and finish, while the second was a simple tap-in.
Paul McGowan – 7.5 – The young striker was handed a rare chance to impress and took full advantage. Showed some nice touches; his excellent header set up Fortune's first goal before scoring a dramatic late equaliser.
Substitutes
Graham Carey – n/a – Handed his debut in the closing stages as he came on for the excellent McGinn, who had picked up a knock.
Chris Killen – n/a – Thrown on in stoppage time as the Hoops pressed for an equaliser.
