Eredivisie outfit Ajax had a difficult evening against Olympique de Marseille on Thursday evening and were beaten 2-1. Benoit Cheyrou and Mamadou Niang found the net for the French side, while Luis Suarez scored Ajax's goal. Ajax coach Marco van Basten reflects on the match.
"We don't have any reasons to complain about the result. We played the entire second half with ten men after Gregory van der Wiel's red card, but we didn't concede an extra goal. We still have a big chance to qualify for the next round," said Van Basten to NOS.
The former Holland boss surprisingly opted to hand Belgian youngster Toby Alderweireld a spot in the starting XI and was satisfied with the defender's performance.
"Toby did a very good job. I'm extremely happy with his performance. We'll be without the suspended likes of Van der Wiel and Thomas Vermaelen next week, so he'll probably play again next week."
"I'm not sure whether Van der Wiel's yellow cards were deserved. They both looked kind of harsh to me, but Gregory needs to be smarter in these kind of situations."
