Orlando Pirates' Thwala ready to compete for a first team spot
Jul 13, 2012 10:35:00 AM
The former Bafana Bafana defender has struggled with injury in recent seasons, but he is still keen to fight for the Buccaneers in the coming campaign
Orlando Pirates' long serving defender Lucas Thwala remains at Bucs ready to compete for a place in the team following his return from a six month loan at Platinum Stars.Speculation has been rife that Thwala might be sacrificed at Pirates after injury troubles saw him get little game time in the last two years.
"Lucas is back at Pirates because he still has two years remaining on his contract with the club," said Jazzman Mahlakgane, Thwala's agent, according to Kickoff.com.
"The fact that he still has a running contract with Pirates means he has to compete for his place in the team.
"All is in order regarding him at Pirates as he is training with the rest of the squad getting ready for the start of the season. The club hasn't advised otherwise regarding him," said Mahlakgane.
Thwala was forced to sit out the whole of the 2010-11 season due to injury before then leaving for Platinum Stars on loan halfway through last season.
Despite being injury prone the 30 year-old remains a respected figure at Pirates for the contribution he has made at the club since breaking into the first team eight years ago.
However, the stark reality facing Thwala is that he will have to unseat any of Siyabonga Sangweni, Lucky Lekgwathi and Rooi Mahamutsa for one of two central defence places while the competition at left-back is even tighter with five players already targeting the position.
