The impressive Sweden-based midfielder is excited to take his chance for Bafana Bafana when they take on the Teranga Lions
The Helsingborgs midfielder was named in Pitso Mosimane’s 23-man squad to play Senegal on Wednesday after making his international debut against Equatorial Guinea last month.
The match against the Teranga Lions will be the first time Mahlangu has trained alongside regular squad members like captain Steven Pienaar, and he admits he can’t wait to experience it.
“I’m very happy – it’s a great feeling to be selected for the national team,” he told KickOff.com.
“To be around the type of players who are also in the squad is a real honour for me. The coach has given me a chance to show what I can do, and hopefully I will.”
Mahlangu is preparing for the new season in Sweden after leading Helsingborgs to the League and Cup Double last year. He has been linked with a move to the Netherlands in the past, with Feyenoord understood to be interested in signing the product of the Stars of Africa Academy in Johannesburg.
But Mahlangu reveals he has yet to hear anything from the Dutch giants and is hoping to represent Helsingborgs in next season’s Uefa Champions League qualifiers.
“I was looking during the January transfer window to get a good offer, but they haven’t negotiated with any team,” he said.
“Now Helsingborgs are willing to have me until June and soon after that, the Champions League begins and they will decide what to do about my future.
"There’s lots of teams who have shown an interest, but as I’m still under contract until 2013. I have to respect that.”
