Katlego Mphela's super strike against Spain in the summer's Confederations Cup is set to earn him FIFA's Goal of the Year award.

“I’m very happy and am highly motivated by the nomination. What inspired me most is the fact that my goal has been nominated from a big tournament like the Confederations Cup where there were a number of world-class strikers,” Mphela told the Sowetan newspaper.

The award is called the FIFA Puskas, created in honour of Ferenc Puskas, captain and star of the Hungarian national team during the 1950s. Puskas, who died at the age of 76 in 2006, scored 84 goals in 85 international matches for his country and 157 goals in 182 matches for Spanish giants Real Madrid between 1958 and 1966.

“This is a prestigious award and I would like to plead with South Africans to vote for my goal. I rate it as one of the best goals I’ve ever scored and should I win this award, I will cherish it for a very long time,” he said.

The Bafana striker has been in fine form this season with Mamelodi Sundowns in the South African PSL, and it would not be a surprise to see him move to Europe next season following the 2010 World Cup.
