Orlando Pirates Coach Ruud Krol Pleased With Win Over Ajax Cape Town
Orlando Pirates coach Ruud Krol believes the 3-0 drubbing of Ajax Cape Town at the weekend was a major confidence booster for his team that has come under severe criticism for its lack of scoring this season.
Coach Ruud Krol says players will be standing with their heads held high as they go into a demanding four week stretch that will see them play nine matches.
Pirates play Mamelodi Sundowns away in Tshwane on Wednesday before they host Moroka Swallows in the traditional Soweto Derby at the weekend.
“Creating goals was never a problem for us because even in the games that we lost points in we were still creating good opportunities," Krol stated. "Just look at the games against Maritzburg United and Santos then you will realise what I am talking about because in those games we should have convincingly punished the opposition.
“It is sad that playing well in football doesn’t count for anything a lot of the times if you are not scoring goals,” said the Dutchman according to Kickoff.com.
“I think it is good for our confidence that we have managed to pick ip maximum points after an international break that usually doesn’t favour us well in most cases.
“Though we have won tonight, the international break has brought about injuries in our team as both Lucas Thwala and Teko Modise picked up injuries during duty with the national team.”
Krol chose not to take any credit about having overcome his opposite number Dutchman Foppe de Haan in a match that saw Pirates complete a double over the Capetonians who have now conceded a massive nine goals in their last two visits to Orlando.
“The players beat Ajax and I am happy for the three points, more than anything else. It was a game in which we didn’t start off well in the first half as we would normally do because we didn’t knock it around but were forced to play it long which is not our strength since we don’t have tall players upfront.
“In the second half we closed them down early and still did the job despite missing some of our key players,” Krol added.
