South Africa have sacked coach Joel Santana with just eight months to go until the start of the World Cup, which they will host.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) came to the decision after a meeting with the Brazilian on Monday.

"It was unanimously agreed Mr Santana would with immediate effect vacate his current position," read a brief statement from the SAFA.

Chief executive Raymond Hack confirmed the news, saying: "Mr Santana is no longer coach of the senior national team."

Assistant coaches Jairo Leal and Pitso Mosimane have been put in temporary charge and the SAFA are due to discuss Santan's successor in a meeting on Friday.

Former coach, and fellow Brazilian, Carlos Alberto Parreira is rumoured to be in the frame. Parreira left his job as coach of South Africa in April 2008 because his wife was ill.
