The former Fulham defender was treated for dehydration after he escaped prosecution when his neighbour dropped an assault complaint and he signed a good behaviour bond

Hapoel Tel Aviv defender John Paintsil has been released from hospital after collapsing from dehydration on Tuesday morning.

Goal.com understands that the former Fulham player was rushed to Ghana-Canada Hospital at East Legon in Accra after passing out.

The Ghanaian’s collapse comes after he was arrested on Friday for allegedly assaulting his wife and subsequently his neighbour who had tried to intervene.

An official statement from his media adviser, Ebenezer Aidoo, said the defender suffered from "exhaustion and dehydration".

He added: "The past five days have taken a severe emotional toll on the entire Paintsil family, Richlove [his wife] and John especially, and that toll manifested itself in the unfortunate incident this morning.

"The Paintsil family is immensely grateful to the government of Ghana and the Ghana Football Association for the big support they have given and continue to give the family."

Paintsil will not face prosecution for attacking neighbour Amoah Dankwah as the complainant has dropped charges against the Black Star player, who had competed in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

"Since the incident, there have been visits from officials of the GFA and the families of Mr and Mrs Paintsil," the businessman told the Daily Graphic.

"More importantly, Mr Paintsil has shown remorse for what happened and I agree that whatever he did was done in a fit of anger and so for the sake of good neighbourliness, there is no point pursuing the case."

The Ghana international is scheduled to sign a good behaviour bond with Accra police on Tuesday as part of his bail agreement, and the former Premier League player has apologised for his actions publicly.

"I'm sorry about what has happened in the past few days," Paintsil told the Graphic Sports newspaper. "But I want to stress, particularly to the young ones who look up to me, that I'm not a violent person in character.

"What happened was just unfortunate. It was a misunderstanding which happens in many marriages every now and then, but our argument got out of hand.

"I lost my temper and threw a punch which unfortunately hit my wife and injured her in the process. For the almost 13 years that we have been married, I've never raised my voice at my wife, let alone hit her.

"I really feel sorry for what happened and on hindsight, I believe I should have controlled my temper no matter how provoked I was."

Paintsil is yet to return to Tel Aviv since the Africa Cup of Nations was completed, but he is expected to fly out to Israel in the foreseeable future should there be no further charges pressed or additional developments.
