Late in the match versus Costa Rica, the big defender went down.
Central defender Oguchi Onyewu tore his patella bone away from the position where it normally rests on top of the knee joint. A torn patellar tendon causes severe damage and agonizing pain when the knee is extended.
Recovery from the injury usually takes 3-4 months.
Onyewu was backpedaling awkwardly to attempt a header late in the final CONCACAF qualifying match versus Costa Rica. He seemed to experience the pain on a step and fell, immediately signaling for medical assistance.
The AC Milan defender was carted away on a stretcher.
Although the USA had already made their final sub, the Americans, who were down by a goal when Onyewu departed, found a late equalizer from another defender, Jonathan Bornstein.
Bornstein headed in an equalizer to keep the USA top of the CONCACAF group.
