John Toshack Tells Jason Koumas The Wales Door Is Still Open
The Wales boss tells Koumas that his international career is not over...
The Wales boss has omitted Koumas from his squad that will play Azerbaijan and Estonia, but he believes there is a way back into the international fold for the 29-year-old.
Koumas played in the team's World Cup qualifier against Finland but turned in a poor display, a performance he has since blamed on an injury he was carrying at the time.
He left the squad before their massive game with Germany and is now expected to have a hip operation during the summer.
But Toshack explained that it is only because of Koumas' lack of games that he was omitted from his most recent squad.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Toshack said, "Jason has not played since the game with Finland, not without his problems.
"I want to have a look at some of the younger midfield players and I have decided to leave him out. Much the same as Carl Fletcher, who has been out of training for a few weeks now.
"The door is not closed for Jason, it is because of his lack of games at club level that he is not selected.
"We had a chat after the Finland game and both decided it would be better for him to get his head down and start playing regular football at his club and we will take it from there."
Wales sit in 4th place in their World Cup qualifying group, 10 points behind leaders Germany.
