Despite possessing some of the best players in world football over the past 35 years, The Netherlands are still yet to win a World Cup. The Oranje reached two successive finals in the 1970s, and still to this day rue their 2-1 final defeat to hosts West Germany in 1974, when a magical team including the likes of Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens and Johnny Rep fell at the final hurdle.

Since then, Holland have been extremely disappointing. They failed to qualify for the 1982, 1986 and 2002 editions, and crashed out in the second round in 1990 and 2006. Their best performances in recent years were at USA ’94 where they reached the quarter finals, and France ’98 where they earned a fourth place finish.

Bryan Roy was part of Dick Advocaat’s 1994 squad, playing in every game during their run to the last eight, where they were toppled 3-2 by Brazil in a classic clash.

Roy was a skilful and explosive left winger, who starred for club teams Ajax, Foggia and Nottingham Forest. The current Ajax Under-14 youth coach spoke to Goal.com to offer his view on Holland’s World Cup chances in South Africa 2010.

“Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart, Robin Van Persie – Holland have a lot of good players,” Roy told Goal.com.

“Stars at Arsenal, Barcelona, Manchester United, Real Madrid are playing for the Dutch team, so we expect a lot from them.

“We should be able to win things with these kinds of players. I think we can definitely challenge for the World Cup.”

Roy, who was also a non-playing squad member at Italia ’90, won 32 caps for the Dutch national team during his career, and scored nine goals. He also starred at Euro ’92.

Holland currently top their World Cup Group 9 qualifying pool with maximum points from three games. This Saturday evening they host Scotland at the Amsterdam Arena in Amsterdam.
