Atalanta have had a respectable first half of the season to date, as they are sitting comfortably in ninth position, with 24 points to their name, after 17 rounds of football.

With just five points separating them from the sixth placed Genoa, European football still remains an objective for the Bergamaschi, heading into the New Year.

In a recent interview with Sky Sports 24, the coach of the club Gigi Delneri has outlined his prospects for the club in 2009.

“I expect that my team will do what we did in 2008, which will be to remain competitive in challenging for a spot in Europe,” Delneri confirmed.

“We always try to play at our best, and so what we have achieved in the past few years has been thanks to the players, who have been focused and determined to do well,” he added.

“We have some stars in our side, such as [Sergio] Floccari and [Cristiano] Doni, however many have forgotten about Christian Vieri.

“I love his desire to do well with this club, and the effort he puts in is phenomenal.

“He is a great champion who works hard, and one that we hope will remain with us beyond 2009,” the coach concluded.

Atalanta get the New Year underway this weekend in Sicily, when they face Palermo at the Renzo Barbera stadium.
