The inquest into the behaviour of Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack continues with West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Mowbray believing that the Germany captain should have been sent off yesterday.

During the course of the Baggies' 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, Ballack appeared to slap Chris Brunt after the Northern Irishman jostled for position.

The matchday official decided against sending off the 32-year-old, a decision that left the West Brom boss befuddled.

He told the press: "It is a bit confusing because he did lift an arm and slap him in the face.

"It was right in front of the referee and that's what he gets paid for – to referee a football match.

"If he doesn't think a slap is worthy of anything other than a yellow card, then so be it."
